Hey guys,
I was replaying the map in the campaign (I think it's Illusia) where your two opponents use a lot of neutral creatures and mass damage spells, so I decided to try out a new strategy that ended up backfiring big time. I figured I would throw in a bunch of creatures that were immune to spells or territory abilities to counter the mass damage spells and then also throw in some venomouspore's to cheaply chain green lands and poison all of my opponents in the large area with the understanding that most of my creatures (Cait Sith, Grimalkin, and the like) would not be subject to the poison enchantments. Sounds like a pretty good plan, right?
Well something went very wrong. I throw down a Cait Sith and level it up straight away thinking he is indestructible since I have counter amulets and gaseous forms. I then play a venomouspore. After a few rounds I have more creatures down and seeing as my opponents have more creatures down I use venomouspore's TA to cast poison on everyone thinking most of my creatures would be immune. To my horror every single creature of mine received the poison enchantment as well. I shrugged it off thinking at least my creatures still can't get zapped to death. Fast forward a few turns and the AI starts busting out the mass damage spells. BAM! Freeze Cyclone and Frost Needle come out and my fully leveled Cait Sith as well as almost all of my other creatures die instantly. At that point I simply turned off my xbox and sat in silence for a few moments wondering what the hell happened.
First of all, what went wrong? Do certain spells override a creature's immunity to spells or TA's such as spells that target everyone and not a specific creature? Was there likely some idol or enchantment around that I didn't notice? Also, what is your strategy for playing against mass damage spells? When I originally beat this level I used a blue book with high HP creatures so they couldn't be zapped easily. I was trying to get away from that by using a Tokebi deck (lost, but very nearly won - just had a couple bad breaks and was the target of a lot of stealing spells when I amassed a huge fortune) and then this anti-spell/TA deck that I explained above (obviously didn't work). I might also try a waste/Ivory Idol deck since those mass damage spells are so expensive but I feel like that's been done to death. Thoughts?
They're not immune to spells. They just can't be targeted. (Similarly, if they ever become paralyzed, such as by an attack from a Living Claw, they can be targeted while they're paralyzed.)
If you want creatures that are immune from damage, you want Odradek (green), Gemoid (neutral) and Sword Princess/Armed Princess (yellow). You can also, as Maxx said, use Mass Phantasm. Another defense would be Clay Idol, which reduces the damage by 10 points, paired with Mass Growth, which ups the HP of all creatures.
Time Tide and Refresh also work, as they can heal all your creatures. But don't use Time Tide if you're using Mass Growth.
