It begins again! Those who have been around here awhile know that I've taken on the challenge of beating each Culdcept game with an unaltered Starter deck. I've managed to do it successfully with every game so far, and now it's Culdcept Revolt's turn!

Comparing the Starter decks in Revolt to the previous games reveals that they're actually a bit better than before. The Ogres are stronger and several other creatures are too. The item set is a bit better - you're not stuck with weak Leather Armor now (it's not even in the game). Finally, the spell set is still pretty simple, but now you're given some draw power in the form of 2x Wind of Hope - that's sure to come in very handy at times.

So, without further ado, off we go! Here are the results of my quest so far, and I'll be posting some commentary on each one as I complete them.

Awakening

A Real Match - Simple Circle - 1v1, vs. Alicia - 7000G
Me: 7054G - Alicia: 2206G

Not a whole lot to tell on the first match in my quest. I managed to get a Fire chain with 2 Red Ogres right away and snagged an Earth land with Rock Troll on my first lap as well. I just pulled away from Alicia after that and never paid higher than a level 2 toll. She didn't win a single battle.

The Rebels

Prove Yourself - Twin Ring - 1v1, vs. Yuma - 8000G
Me: 8187G - Yuma: 4268G

The dice bit me twice mid-match, and I rolled onto a level 3 Wall of Ice and a level 3 Aqualing I couldn't take in back-to-back turns. I managed to do a natural land transfer both times with my 4-chain on Fire and the damage wasn't too bad as a result. I funneled the G into Woodfolk and Gas Cloud, which Yuma skillfully avoided for the entire match... until the last round, when she inexplicably didn't cast Holy Word 6 to skip past my level 4 Woodfolk and instead rolled a 2 right onto it, handing me the win on a plate. Gotta love the AI.

The Rebels

Day of Fate - Simple Branch - 1v1v1, vs. Yuma vs. Gen - 8000G
Me: 9091G - Yuma: 1260G - Gen: 3098G

I actually killed both of Gen's Gas Clouds in this match, which was surprising, since the Starter deck isn't terribly powerful offensively. It was a fairly uneventful match until Yuma and Gen decided it was time to take a vacation at the Green Ogre Hotel over and over. I went from being about 1000G in the lead to winning in short order. Hehe.

Drifter of the City

The Lone Gunman - Number 8 - 1v1, vs. Nighthawk - 8000G
Me: 8534G - Nighthawk: 4937G

I'm beginning to appreciate Phlogiston's Critical Hit ability more and more. Even with a lowly Long Sword, the fiery fluffball does 90 damage to most creatures in the game, usually enough to take the land. Revolt's resident Clint Eastwood impersonator managed to hold his own until I killed his level 3 Green Ogre with Rock Troll + Magma Hammer. After that, I steadily pulled away.

The Road Forward - Spikes - 1v1v1, vs. Tenet vs. Yuma - 8000G
Me: 9715G - Tenet: 5587G - Yuma: 4160G

Spikes is a funny map. On one hand, you can take the 4 double-backs early in the game to cherry-pick lands and achieve a nice clumped setup, but you can also get yourself in real trouble later by tempting fate down those same detours. Do you detour down an alley and hope you don't roll onto that high land anyway, or do you detour back the other direction, postpone your lap bonus and hope that your opponents pay up in the meantime? That was my dilemma this match. I tempted fate very late in the match and fortunately, when the dice bit me, I just happened to have my trusty Rock Troll + Magma Hammer combo in hand and smashed Yuma's level 4 Wall of Ice into ice cubes. Game over next turn.

Wandering Executioner - Metro Bridge - 1v1v1, vs. Zonx vs. Yuma - 8000G
Me: 11880G - Zonx: 1350G - Yuma: 1420G

I'm just strolling along, minding my own business, holding about a 2000G lead, when Zonx and Yuma both roll onto level 4 lands and pay up big. My lead grows to nearly 5000G. I'm heading for home and they both roll onto level 4 lands and pay up big again. <throws flag> Unnecessary roughness! 15 yards!

The Territorial Library - Yin Yang - 1v1, vs. Somnia vs. Nighthawk - 8000G
Me: 8197G - Somnia: 1277G - Nighthawk: 2481G

Knowing how hard it is to deal with Somnia's high-HP Water creatures once she gets established, I took an aggressive approach and smashed her Undines early and often. She never got off the ground. Nighthawk thought he'd be cute and level a Red Ogre to 4, but I took it away with Magic Bolt + Phlogiston + Spark Ball. Direct damage + scrolls is a strategy I haven't explored much in Culdcept... I might have to make a deck based on that... hmm...

Drifter of the City

Connected Hands - Dual Branch - 2v2, with Yuma vs. Zonx and Hypna - 12000G
Me and Yuma: 12737G - Zonx and Hypna: 6148G

Yuma and I doubled their total G, and the match wasn't even that close, thanks to Yuma and I both having Squirrines and Woodfolks. Zonx managed to zero one of my tolls with Moon Scimitar, but I made him pay LARGE next time around with Holy Word 3 after I swapped in another Squirrine. We didn't pay a significant toll all match long.

One Who Hides in Darkness

Into the Fire - Morph Arrow - 1v1, vs. Terrormire - 8000G
Me: 8019G - Terrormire: 3650G

This one was satisfying. Terrormire's decks are among the most aggressive in the game, so I knew I needed to catch him sleeping early, and I managed to do that with a level 4 Squirrine on lap 3. I completely ignored the Fire half of the Starter deck because I knew he would just smash it flat anyway, and focused instead on building a small Earth chain early on. A Squirrine, a Wall of Stone and a Woodfolk was all it took. I lapped, leveled the fuzzball up to 4 as soon as I had enough G and Terrormire rolled right next to it 2 turns later. I had Holy Word 1 already in hand, waiting. He didn't even try to fight, surprisingly. I poured the profits into Woodfolk and Wall of Stone and managed to add 2 more to my Earth chain as I ran like mad for home. I lapped a mere 19G over the goal with 4 rounds to spare on the round timer. Epic.

Memories of Low Town - Route Change - 2v2, with Sych vs. Mori and Memen - 12000G
Me and Sych: 12143G - Mori and Memen: 4653G

What do you do when both enemy Cepters have your deck completely countered, and your ally is a complete dolt? You turn everything on its head, that's what!

Instead of claiming and leveling Fire+Earth lands, I claimed Water+Air, knowing that Sych would swap in his own stuff ASAP. That also helped his prereq-heavy deck avoid stalling at the start. I held my G otherwise and leveled his lands only where I knew he could defend against Memen and Mori's onslaught. I managed to help him kill a level 3 Gelatinous Wall early on, and he later killed a level 4 Yeti (with Gelatinous Armor on) with Nightmare + Chilling Blast. The dice gave us a nice pile of luck and neither of us ever paid a toll above level 1.

Battle at the Back Gate - Long Horn - 1v1v1, vs. Nighthawk vs. Zeneth - 8000G
Me: 8761G - Nighthawk: 3005G - Zeneth: 4323G

Support carried me big-time in this one. Woodfolk and Squirrine survived battle after battle. For some odd reason, Nighthawk and Zeneth reserved their high-ST invasions for each other, and usually when it was meaningless. I'm fine with that. Fight amongst yourselves, fellas... I'll just be over here winning the match. Heh.

Conflicting Memories - Side Trip - 1v1v1, vs. Hypna vs. Nighthawk - 8000G
Me: 8483G - Hypna: 935G - Nighthawk: 1309G

In round 1, I put a Woodfolk on the Earth land right next to the magic trap and he ended up being the match MVP. Hypna and Nighthawk each rolled there two times apiece with no help from me. Too easy.

Storming the Castle - Junction - 2v2, with Yuma vs. Hypna and Terrormire - 12000G
Me and Yuma: 12433G - Hypna and Terrormire: 9210G

Hypna tried absolutely everything in her power to stop us... Screamer + Exile, Cockatrice + Battering Ram, side-attacking from a level 3 to take a level 4 (twice!)... but for every strong step forward, she'd take one back as I somehow had just enough ST to take away 3 level 4 lands. Yuma made no mistakes the whole match (amazing!), and Terrormire was a total non-factor. (even more amazing!)

Butler Langol - Switch Box - 1v1v1, vs. Goligan vs. Nighthawk - 8000G
Me: 8534G - Goligan: 2366G - Nighthawk: 2183G

I got a nearly perfect start, placing a Woodfolk on the morph land near the starting gate and a Squirrine on an Earth land in the lower right. I leveled Woodfolk to 3 ASAP and Goligan rolled right onto it. I leveled it to 4, Nighthawk placed a Blast Trap on it, and Goligan blundered into it again, exhausting himself in the process. I took the profits and leveled Squirrine and another Woodfolk to 4 and this time Goligan and Nighthawk both stopped by. Even the two switches helped out, keeping my opponents on the right side the entire match. It was extremely easy, but I could see how this match could become a royal pain if the dice and switches weren't favorable.

Duel with the Monarch - Bumblebee - 2v2, with Yuma vs. Kraniss and Terrormire - 14000G
Me and Yuma: 15717G - Kraniss and Terrormire: 9422G

I went into this one thinking it would be one of the most difficult Quest stages to beat with a Starter deck, but it ended up being not bad at all. Yuma and I helped each other establish a long Earth chain near the lower middle gate, and Kraniss and Terrormire couldn't deal with it. Both opponents paid large tolls, while Yuma and I both managed to avoid paying anything of significance. Very satisfying.

One Who Hides in Darkness

This World's Fate - Quattro Box - 1v1v1v1, vs. Sych vs. Zeneth vs. Kraniss - 10000G
Me: 12261G - Sych: 4766G - Zeneth: 445G - Kraniss: 4771G

Through about half a dozen infuriating losses, I really thought this stage might be the end of the road for the Starter deck quest.

Match after match, I would run away with it until about 7000-8000G and then my 3 opponents would decide that was far enough and would consistently do something devastating to prevent me from winning. Sometimes it was an enchantment from someone and then Sych would Exile me. Other times, I'd get the Quintessence + Holy Banishment treatment. Still other times, Zeneth would Cluster Burst the place (including his own stuff!) and then someone would finish off one of my high lands with Magic Bolt. It was driving me nuts... until today.

After nearly backing into a win last match via G reallocation from a toll-induced level-5 selloff, I decided to go for broke in one last desperate attempt at it. I patiently built an Earth chain (since Zeneth seems to enjoy nuking the Fire creatures with Cluster Burst), and then dumped all of my G into leveling a Wall of Stone to 5. Wonder of wonders, Zeneth was courteous enough to roll right next to it when I had Holy Word 1 and an Armet in hand. He had no chance at all of killing it. I took the 2816G and leveled two other lands to 5 ASAP and then ran like mad for home... but not before Fly decided to bless me with a 0+0+1 roll, followed by rolling a 3, and then a 1. Urgh!

I won anyway. Take THAT, you perfect storm of a Starter deck counter stage!

Attack Sacred City - Middle Circle - 1v1, vs. Fyflie - 8000G
Me: 9318G - Fyflie: 3183G

This one was almost a joke compared to the last gauntlet I ran. I kept rolling onto Fyflie's lands early on, and she couldn't defend them, so I just kept killing them and that kept her from getting anything established. Later on, she managed to take a level 4 land from me by killing my Gas Cloud with a scroll-wielding Knight-errant. I had a Red Ogre idling next door, so I just waited patiently for Spark Ball to arrive. In the meantime, she leveled Knight-errant to 5, oblivious to the danger. I took the land back and won two turns later. No sweat.

Home Reunion - Parallel Land - 1v1v1, vs. Fyflie vs. O'Lange - 8000G
Me: 10363G - Fyflie: 3012G - O'Lange: 525G

I think O'Lange might have a secret crush on Woodfolk, because he rolled onto my ever-increasing Woodfolk nearly every lap. A level 3 toll, followed by a level 4, and finally a magic-exhausting level 5. Meanwhile, he kept trying his hardest to take lands from Fyflie for some unknown reason. This held her total G down and gave the match to me with barely a struggle. I'll take it!

Head of the Sacred City - Large Window - 2v2, with Yuma vs. Endieg and Fyflie - 12000G
Me and Yuma: 12168G - Endieg and Fyflie: 9635G

This one was actually nowhere near as close as the final score made it look. Yuma and I jumped out to a big lead early with long chains on Fire, Earth and Water, and we never looked back. Endieg hoarded G the entire match and leveled almost nothing until we were close to victory, and then he leveled lands we could easily avoid. Fyflie leveled her lands aggressively, but Yuma pulled off some very opportunistic moves to take away several of them. It was one of the better performances I've seen from an AI ally.

A Rival Appears! - Magatama - 1v1v1, vs. Sych vs. Endieg - 8000G
Me: 8834G - Sych: 4889G - Endieg: 3791G

This match came down to one key thing: proper land leveling. I leveled mine when chained and where they would hurt the most (by the starting gate), while Sych and Endieg leveled theirs unchained and/or in places I could easily avoid. I didn't pay a toll higher than level 2 the whole match, while they both paid me early and often. Highlight of the match: I kept a Wall of Stone alive by equipping Sling - it survived a Storm Spear attack with 5HP left.

Pursuing Moonlight - Jail Tower - 1v1v1, vs. Ruliena vs. O'Lange - 8000G
Me: 10548G - Ruliena: 1734G - O'Lange: 3733G

O'Lange and I both found ourselves stuck in the center island for about half a dozen rounds as Ruliena built a decent lead early. It wasn't looking good, but then I managed to get out and Ruliena joined O'Lange in jail - he was still in jail for about half a dozen rounds after she got out. Just brutal.

Things were a little touch-and-go until Ruliena summoned Otohime (she gives +10HP to defending creatures), which made my growing Support empire virtually immune to injury, much less death. It was a full-on rout from that point, as O'Lange finally got paroled and proceeded to pay his court costs to me in full with interest. About the same time, the dice turned on Ruliena and her multiple tolls were more than enough to help me win by a landslide.

The Soul Departure - Battle Wagon - 2v2, with Yuma vs. Zalion and Delion - 12000G
Me and Yuma: 12361G - Zalion and Delion: 10706G

Typical Battle Wagon match - dominate the "handlebar" section of the map and you dominate the match... until Zalion took a Drill Lance-wielding Branch Army to my level 4 Squirrine and turned the match on its head. Naturally, he immediately evolved it into Mudman, which meant I had no shot at all of reclaiming the land. So, I switched to a land-transfer strategy and managed to bump us over the 12000G goal before Yuma or I stumbled into a high toll. Whew.

Parallel Princess - Catch Away - 1v1, vs. Princess Alicia - 10000G
Me: 10162G - Princess Alicia: 2828G

Pulverized Princess, more like. Alicia had no shot whatsoever. I was able to establish a long Earth chain very quickly and she rolled onto my high-level lands over and over, with no attempt at all to try and kill any of them. I think I paid 3 tolls total the whole match, all level 1. This might've been the easiest match since A Real Match (at the end of the tutorial).

Risking Tomorrow - Gold Bug - 1v1v1, vs. Demigod Sych vs. Zeneth - 10000G
Me: 12254G - Demigod Sych: 9696G - Zeneth: 940G

Demigod Sych better call the cops, because I just stole his win. He was about to lap with roughly a 2k lead and was close enough to the G goal that his lap bonus would push him over the top, and there wasn't anything Zeneth or I could do to stop him.

That is, until Zeneth rolled right next to my level 5 Woodfolk and I had Holy Word 1 in hand. Zeneth paid me 2816G and Sych rolled a 2. Then another 2. I needed to roll a 4 or higher to win. I drew Fly, and managed to roll a 5 with it. Some days I'd rather be lucky than good. Hehe.
