GameFAQs Gamer Review - DarkenedEyes (8/10)

I summon a great score for Culdcept Saga

Culdcept Saga is the most recent game that originated on the PS2 several years ago. Culdcept is the book of creation (sort of like a giant book of magic, creatures and heavenly weapons/items). Your role in this game is that of a Cepter (a person who is able to summon the power of creatures locked into cards). Only Cepters can wield the powerful cards in battle. Basically, this game takes your character on a journey from humble beginnings to fierce battles facing an assortment of Cepters along the way. Card battle is not the only objective to this game. There is a strong "Monopoly-ish" factor as well. Each board (similar to an actual board game board) is set up differently with specific magic power (gold/money) requirements to meet before moving on to future boards.

GAMEPLAY:
Very much like playing a board game, you must roll electronic dice to move around this virtual game board. Luck and strategy are very large factors in Culdcept Saga. You may find that some attempts around the board are much more successful than others depending on the cards that you draw and the number rolled on the dice. Placing creature cards according to their element is an important part of the game (unless your creature is of a neutral element). If your creature is placed on the proper element there are additional benefits it will receive. It is important to carefully read your cards before summoning them at any point during your turn. Keep a close eye on your money and keep in mind that almost every card costs to summon. Nothing is worse than not being able to defend a major property because you cannot afford to summon a shield or armor. Your cards fall into one of these categories: Item, Spell, Creature, There are 4 elements (Air, Earth, Water, Fire) and as well as a neutral and a multi element your creature cards will be assigned to. You can only carry a certain amount of cards in your hand during your turn and you must sacrifice a card if you are over and this adds to the strategic thought process required for this game. Should you sacrifice your shield or your armor? Will it benefit me to keep my spell card or this water creature, and so on and so forth...your decisions will affect your game results directly. Each time you defeat a Cepter, you gain extra cards (some new and others repeats) and this allows you to create and re-work a deck over and over as needed for each opponent. The gameplay is fun and always different. Your game is as good as your deck. With the Xbox 360 there is now an option to play against others online and this adds a great deal of replay value and fun.

GRAPHICS:
The graphics in this game are pretty basic for the capabilities of the Xbox 360...nothing horrible, just very basic. The card illustrations are very attractive and highly detailed. The graphics in Culdcept Saga are better than that of the Culdcept game on PS2, but nothing to take your breath away.

MUSIC:
Nothing to write home about, but oddly enough, the music generally fits the gameplay...light and fun for the most part.

CHARACTERS:
The characters in this game to me are somewhat generic and uninspired, but the saving grace for this game as well as the first has always been the gameplay and replay value. Culdcept Saga has a neat new feature that allows you to personalize your character adding armor and even weapons that can be seen on your character during gameplay.

RENT OR BUY?:
Buy this game. You can always go online and play whenever you can spare a few minutes. You will find yourself wanting to collect all of the cards (almost 500 cards to collect) and this is great fun, especially if you are playing with friends or family.

CLOSING COMMENTS:
You will like this game if you are looking for a game that is a great combination of Card Battle and Monopoly. In my opinion, this game is a great addition to the XBOX 360. I give Culdcept Saga a final score of an 8 out of 10 (GREAT).
