GameFAQs Gamer Review - Slimmdiggins (9/10)

Yugi-Monopoly, but tons better than both!

Those who know me know I don't pull any punches. A player of all games and systems; and a fanboy of none. I'm a huge fan of card collecting and Mario Party has put a smile on my face more than once, so this game was pretty much right up my ally.

From what I know Culdcept is a hit in Japan, yet it is failing Stateside. The only reason I can figure out is that the strategy card collectors out there know nothing of the game or are afraid to plunge into a new world that isn't Magic, Yugi, Romance of Kingdom, or FF Tactic related.

What Culdcept is, is an amalgamation of RPG strategy, board gaming, and card collecting. Sound confusing? Well the first three matches I played I was rather confused myself, but after that I was able to fully comprehend the nature of the game. Having a background in monopoly and card battle games like Yu-Gi-Oh! or Magic will be extremely helpful.

Gameplay: This will be the hardest part of the game to understand, but I will try my best to break it down easily. You are a Cepter, one of many individuals who have the ability to summon monsters from a book of cards. The books are made up by the Cepters themselves and are composed of whatever cards they have collected. A maximum amount of 50 cards can be used to create a book.

The field is laid out like a board game. You move by dice rolls, moving whatever number you manage to get. If the space you land on is not owned, you can own it yourself. The spaces on the board have different elemental properties: wind, water, fire, and grass.

As you move along this board you will collect G. G is not gold or gil, it is magic power. In this world magic is tangible and can be spent or taken. You get G by making laps around the board or by forcing your opponent to pay tolls.

Each card in your book will be one of three types: Monster, Spell, or item. The monster cards are what you will fight and occupy land with. Spells can be used before you roll the dice. Items are used to boost up your monster during a confrontation.

The Monster cards have the same elemental properties that the spaces have. You can use any monster on any space, but matching up the types boosts the monsters power. Placing a monster on an empty space claims ownership of that space. You can own as many spaces as you land on and have monsters for. Each monster comes with a toll. When the enemy lands on that space they must pay the toll. If they don't want to pay the toll they can use a monster card from their book to challenge your monster. If they win they get the space. If you win they must pay the toll. The same goes for you if you land on an enemies space.

There are many more factors that change the outcomes of the monster challenges and G collecting, but I think you have a good idea of how game plays now. All in all it is a very well balances system. All though it is confusing at first. 9/10

+ very well balanced
- somewhat confusing

Graphics: The characters look like cel-shaded FF Tactics characters. The backgrounds are bland. But the art designs of the cards are awesome. Since the cards are the main focus of the game I'll have to give consideration for that. Also, the graphics IN NO WAY cheapen the experience. 7/10

+ card design is awesome
- backgrounds are an afterthought

Sound: I like the variation in themes for each area. Even the fight music changes for each area. The music also fluctuates with the action. If you or the enemy is doing well the music gets fast paced. 9/10

+ great music that changes with each level
- can get to annoying when you on the same level for an hour or so

Replay: This is a card collecting game at its heart. So if you want all 400+ cards, you'll have to play for quite awhile. The story is cool, but this game also has 4 player options. Each person can use their own decks that they have built up at home and try to beat one another. That says tons for the replay value.

In closing, this game is awesome for card collectors and board game enthusiasts alike. If you enjoy strategy games or collecting it is a must-have.
